Knowingly or not, one of the things we gardeners do, is create habitat for all manner of living creatures. Consciously working with these systems is a fun and satisfying design principle. I mix flowers and herbs in with vegetable plantings to help attract beneficial insects. Beneficials, like honeybees, pollinate many of our food crops. Bees travel from one plant to the next, collecting nectar, and gathering pollen on their legs. This pollen gets spread to other flowers, fertilizing them. The fertilization causes the fruits to grow.
